Hotel Review: The Waddell Hotel in Port Hope

June 30, 2018:  Our hotel for the night was at The Waddell Hotel in Port Hope.   The Waddell Hotel is a century-old historic Heritage District hotel that resides right beside the Ganaraska River and also has an Italian restaurant on the lower level, the Trattoria Gusto.

We had dined at the Trattoria Gusto for dinner the last time we were here (a wonderful Italian dinner that you can read about here).  The Waddell Hotel is a three-storey complex.  We had room 206 on the second floor.  (They do have an elevator.)

It was an elegant room with high ceilings, a queen sized bed, a warm fireplace (not that we needed it on this humid summer weekend), views overlooking the Ganaraska River, and a roomy bathroom as well.  It was lovely, clean, and comfortable.  The design was reminiscent of period-style houses.

Even the bathroom has a view of the river!

The bed was a queen poster bed with long bed posts.  It further added to the period charm of the room.  The curtains, pattern on the armchairs, custom-built cherry furnishings, and portraits hung on the wall all added to the character of the room.

There was a Keurig coffee machine in the room, a flat-screen TV, mini fridge, and wireless Internet.  (They have limited onsite parking, but when we inquired about this, we were told that we could park across the street at the building providing that it was the weekend.)

The next morning, we headed downstairs to the Trattoria Gusto restaurant for breakfast which was included with our hotel stay (I love hotels that include breakfast as part of the stay).

We enjoyed a hearty classic breakfast and omelette with a roadside view next to the big windows in the front of the restaurant.

I ordered the Gusto Breakfast which included two eggs any style, breakfast sausage or bacon, breakfast potatoes with roasted caponata, and toast.  I chose scrambled eggs and the breakfast sausage.

Ken ordered the three-egg Omelette with a choice of three ingredients, breakfast potatoes, roasted caponata, and toast.  He chose tomatoes, spinach, and cheddar cheese (I believe… or was it mushrooms).

It was a really nice quiet morning to enjoy the breakfast sitting by the window and in big comfy armchairs.  The restaurant wasn’t open yet for outside guests but only serving the hotel guests.

Happy mornings

I enjoyed the stay at Waddell Hotel.  The best thing about the hotel is that it is right in the centre of Port Hope so you can enjoy a quiet stay but still be able to walk to all of the Downtown attractions in Port Hope.  The views were gorgeous too to be able to wake up and see the Ganaraska River out the window.  Port Hope is always a wonderful weekend getaway.

After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel seamlessly by leaving the keys on the platter in the lobby.  They have a reception desk for the hotel, but during quiet times, the staff at the front desk of the restaurant acts also as the reception and receiving staff for the hotel.
